Mother Earth and Grandfather Rock

Designed and Produced by Susanne Still

Hand-Built, Carved, Embossed, & Contoured

 World Petroglyph Reproductions

What are petroglyphs?  Literally translated, the word means "rock writing".  Created by ancient peoples sharing and saluting timeless truths about human life, spiritual forces, and man's place in the universal stream, petroglyphs can be found at sacred sites throughout the world.  Seen by many as humanity's first universal "medicine art" language, these cryptic carvings unite us with a time when man, spirit & nature worked in harmony as one intelligent, compassionate force.  Petroglyphs commemorate births, deaths, ceremonial events and shamanic rites of passage, and are revered by spiritual elders for their "mana", or living spiritual power.

In the 1990's, these hand made art works were shown through the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, representing the indigenous arts of Hawai'i at an international conference celebrating the "Year of the Indigenous Peoples".  They have been shown extensively throughout the Hawaiian Islands, including the Polynesian Cultural Center, The Bishop Museum, the Hana, Maui, Cultural Center, The Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Imax Theatres, the Duty Free Shops in Honolulu International Airport, The Elephant Walk in the Hyatt Regency Maui, The Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center, The Hotel Hana gift shop, and Waikiki Trader's Endangered Species stores.

In 2005, a special piece with a Hopi petroglyph entitled "Bringing the Light" was presented to the First Lady of Kenya, Mrs. Lucy Kibaki, by the noted late humanitarian Father Angelo D'Agostino, S.J., M.D., as an honorarium for her personal and political support given his Nyumbani Village Project, a medical center, orphanage and hospice eco-village in Kenya.

The works have also found their way into the hands of such celebrities as Whoopi Goldberg, Spike Lee, Woody Harrelson, Yoko Ono, Peter Gabriel, Jean Michael Costeau, Gary Shandling, and "Sweet Honey" of Sweet Honey and the Rock.  Many have been presented as gifts to highly respected medicine healers and tribal elders.

Each piece is hand made in clay and embossed with authentic designs ceremonially reproduced from rock carvings, cave paintings, geoglyphs, and sacred shamanic objects from the world's tribal peoples.

Susanne Still on Relating with Clay

"When I first started working with this wondrous medium in the 1970's, my teacher, the late Olive Briggs from Gainesville, Florida, insisted that "clay was alive" and needed to be treated with honor and respect, and that before any piece was to be fashioned it was quite important to connect with and salute the Earth Mother, and ask to be a conduit for the higher intelligence which flows through all things manifest.

I was fortunate to have medicine teachings such as these and I continue to share this precept with those who study such matters. Bringing the spirit of respect and humility to all creative work empowers the medicine art process.  While clay very willingly "goes" where you intend it, all who work in this medium will also note that at times it seems to have a life, a "mission" of its own.  When this sort of dynamic comes into play, it is a special opportunity to elevate oneself beyond one's  intention. Merging with this knowing, flowing creative force paves the way to many beautiful and unexpected outcomes."

Thunderbirds are considered to be supernatural beings and are often depicted in North American rock art sites. Dramatic storms were believed to be caused by this enormous bird able to make thunder by flapping its wings and lightning by opening and closing its eyes. The Thunderbird is considered to be a clan ancestor as well as a powerful guardian spirit, bringing long life and success in war.

"Mandala"

A mandala is a spiritual art form which represents the divine order of the universe, as well as the divine design carried within each living creature.

"Kokopelli" Framed Tile

One of the best known and widely loved symbols of the majestic  Southwest region, Kokopelli is known for his music, said to create warmth and fertility wherever he travelled.  His back was said to contain seeds and plants, and some legends tell us that his music was so provocative that many maidens were irresistably drawn to him.  Kokopelli is seen as a symbol of fertility, and the universal healing power of music.
